AOL and XM Satellite Radio have announced a partnership to share content for their respective platforms.

“Web surfers will be able to access 20 XM channels on AOL’s radio section, along with its current roster of about 130 stations, for free. A new version of AOL’s “premium” radio service will have 70 XM channels and be available for a monthly fee, which has not been set, XM spokesman David Butler said. AOL subscribers will automatically receive the enhanced service.” Read the press release here.

This is a good move for both companies with online radio fans seeing upside as well. AOL broadens their online radio offerings with an opportunity to generate additional revenue for premium content. XM’s specialty programming gets opened up to a much bigger audience through AOL and provides an opportunity for them to capture new subscribers. The data collected from online listening habits will help in making decisions on programming adjustments and the addition of new programming, which improves things for everyone all the way around. A big thumbs up on this deal…
