NBC and Apple have struck a deal to distribute NBC television programming through iTunes as a la carte downloads. This is more good news for consumers in terms of a low-cost way to timeshift and consume their entertainment at their leisure, and $1.99 seems like a reasonable price that is less time consuming than searching for a free Bit Torrented copy of a given show. And let’s see how easy the mechanism of transferring Tivo’d content to the video iPod is when it debuts early next year in terms of “free” alternatives to buying from iTunes.

And lets take a moment to digest this inspirational quote from NBC’s Jeff Zucker:

“As long as our content is protected from piracy, then there will be no barriers.”

The cold, hard reality is that no content is protected, and much of what has aired in the last 24 hours is already circulating freely. That said, it still takes time to search and download this “free” content, and offering a low-cost alternative that is authorized, legal, virus-free, fast and easy makes all the sense in the world. Kudos to NBC and lets hope they are the first of many.
