Slashdot reports on a new piece of software called Kenosis, which is described as a ‘fully-distributed peer-to-peer RPC system built on top of XMLRPC.’ That description isn’t going to get anyone a date to the prom, but the net significance is notable–combining Kenosis with BitTorrent removes the need for a centralized tracker which is one of the primary weaknesses of BitTorrent as a distribution mechanism. While this addresess that weakness, it introduces a few additional problems to which BitTorrent has historically been resistant such as the unintentional introduction of bad data or the intentional introduction of spoofs. It can be expected that as this (and similar projects) evolve, the improvements will continue (for example, Kenosis takes a step towards addressing the problems in using BitTorrent behind firewalls) and the holes and weakness will be plugged and strengthened.
