While this article isn’t specifically about an online music marketing initiative, the points Mr. Allen makes are applicable to the music industry and beyond. We as an industry have historically underestimated how savvy our customers are when it comes to their participation in online communities. The days of paying a roomful of interns to sit in chat rooms and talk up the newest releases that week are over…..those tactics were always transparent, rarely effective and ultimately insulting to the intelligence of the people we’re trying to forge a relationship with. As a rule of thumb, any relationship built on a foundation of dishonesty is doomed to fail, whether its marriage, friendship or a customer relationship.
