Email Sucks: We Need a Better Way to Communicate

December 13th, 2004 · No Comments

This article is but one of many that illustrates the many impracticalities of using email as our primary marketing and communications tool.  Between phishing scams, inbox overload and oceans of spam, what was once a useful tool has become a challenge in being heard.  I used to look forward to the email newsletters from my favorite bands….now I hope they make it through the spam filter, or that they simply don’t get lost in the over 600 messages that come into my inbox every day.

Fortunately, alternatives exist, though widespread adoption is still relatively small when compared to email.  Still, using RSS, Blogging, Mobile Text Messaging and Podcasting may prove not only more practical but more compelling.  In order to increase the size of the audience using these alternatives, we have to take an active role in educating consumers, artists, managers and other music industry folks.  The idea isn’t to blind them with science, but in a straightforward way show them what is possible using some of these relatively new (and easy to use) technologies.
