A new virus that wipes out MP3 files on hard drives is working its way through P2P systems. The Nopir.B worm is hidden in a DVD cracking program that can be downloaded from P2P networks. Once the file is run, it deletes all MP3 files on the hard drive along with a number of other critical system files. The worm will also prevent access to the Windows Control Panel and Taskmanager. Of course, as soon as the news of this virus started making the rounds there was instantaneous finger pointing at the music industry as the agents behind the creation of this virus though there isn’t a shred of evidence that this is the case. But the Internet has made conspiracy theories an entertaining contact sport and the music industry has made itself an easy target, so this isn’t all that surprising. At the same time, this isn’t the first virus to appear via P2P and it certainly won’t be the last….it’s pretty clear that the P2P future is headed towards a series of interconnected private networks with "trust networks" and aggressive anti-virus measures serving as barriers to viruses and other malware, while simultaneously making it harder to track and shut down illegal P2P activity. The technological arms race continues…
