"Once seen as the embodiment of evil, devices that record satellite radio are making inroads without much fight from the recording industry."
Time-shifting as a consumer behavior continues to propogate beyond the Tivo. While I enjoy my XM radio very much, I’m not always around (or awake) when interesting programming is airing. A recent example of this was XM’s "Then Again: Live!" show where bands come into the XM studios and recreate classic albums. The Allman Brothers current lineup (which I raved about in my Best of 2004 post) came into the studio to recreate the classic "Eat a Peach" album and I was away at a family event. I installed the Time Trax software, connected my XM PCR, set the time of the program and left my computer on. When I got back home later that evening, I had the .wav file on my hard drive. It took me about 5 minutes to cut the .wav into individual tracks, and then synced them onto my IPod. The sound quality was great, and with the exception of the need to split the .wav into individual tracks, this was no more complex or time consuming then setting my Tivo to record a television program.
Here’s the Wired article, and here’s a picture of the IPod docking device referenced in the article.

Syd — Great blog! I stumbled upon it looking for torrents of the Allman Brothers performance on XM earlier this week. I caught the first half, and they sounded amazing and want to hear the rest, not to mention add it to my collection. Do you know if any sites posting recordings of the show … or would you be willing to share? Would love to hear from you….
