This article from Extreme Tech is just one of several that have appeared over the last few days that reports on commercial or Open Source software that leverages the capabilities of Sony’s PSP beyond its default functionality.  In this case, the PocketMac software allows users to listen to their iTunes playlists (as well as synching their contacts and photos) on their PSP.  Two other interesting pieces of PSP software are iPSP and PSPWare.

The speed at which independent developers and the Open Source community seek to extend PSP funcitonality is impressive. Sony stands to do very well selling PSP hardware and games…why not let entrepreneurs and smart individuals dig for riches that lie just beneath the surface? After all, if they succeed in making the PSP a more engaging entertainment device that supports a wide variety of formats, it only sells more hardware for Sony.  I’m not suggesting that selling music through the Sony Connect service isn’t important to Sony, but perhaps they’re taking a cue from Apple, who isn’t getting rich off $0.99 music downloads but they sure are raking it in selling a lot of iPods….
