The Digital Only Record Label…Again

"Universal’s new label represents another leap – the belief that by signing enough acts with small, established audiences, the company can earn a profit on digital sales alone. The new unit, Universal Music Enterprises Digital, could become a model for labels that are seeking a low-risk way to market an act without producing a physical album or underwriting a band’s tour or music videos."

This concept has been kicking around in various incarnations for years, yet successful execution has remained elusive.  The current music industry model is founded on a series of economic premises that are akin to strategies one might discuss en route to a weekend in Las Vegas, and a change in the model is long overdue to bring some economic sensibility to the table.  Is Universal’s experiment the initiative that will finally get it right?  Read the full article here….
