The Internet is Great for Musicians. Or Not….

No matter which side of the file-sharing issue you are on, the widely reported/blogged Pew Internet & American Life Project report Artists, Musicians and the Internet is an important read.

But file-sharing isn’t the only area in the digital music universe that has both proponents and naysayers…this interesting article by longtime netizen David "Zzyzx" Steinberg raises the issue of the pros and cons of community feedback in the context of band development.  While the article focuses specifically on jambands, the issues raised are applicable across the board.  At the core of the issues are expectations…those of the fans, those of the band, and those in between (managers, labels, lawyers, publicists etc.).  As David suggests "If the majority of the vocal participants of a board don’t like a song or a band or a jam it becomes received wisdom."  Read on….
