In today’s Wall Street Journal, Tim Hanrahan and Jason Fry offer their take on whether hybrid MP3 phones can topple (or at least significantly challenge) Apple’s stronghold over the digital music space. Who will be the big winner? Could be both parties, with the “swiss army knife” device that handles both communication and media playing having a good deal of appeal. At the same time, the relatively small size of both MP3 players and cellphones make it easy to consider carrying both while allowing each dedicated device to remain specialized. The power of Apple’s brand make betting against Jobs & Co. at this point in time a potential loss, but as technology advances and competitors nip at Apple’s heels a more level playing field is likely and from the standpoint of the music industry it would be welcome. Read on….

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again though….unless both specialized and hybrid devices in cooperation with music services are moving towards complete interoperability, the digital music space will remain crippled. Stop the madness!
