A modal masterpiece with high caliber musicianship, this one’s both obscure & FANTASTIC. The first Polish jazz album to make its way past the Iron Curtain in 1964, this Modern Jazz Quartet led by 24 year old alto saxophonist Zbigniew Namysłowski recorded ‘Lola’ during a trip to London, released on Decca (SKL 4644, stereo). Featuring largely original compositions and a unique sound with nods to ‘Trane, Ornette and Dolphy (but without sounding overtly influenced by any of them), this rarity is infectious. With Wlodzimierz Gulgowski (piano), Tadeusz Wójcik (bass), Czesław Bartkowski (drums). There’s been a couple of CD reissues over the years but the vinyl is painfully scarce. A shame…this is one of my favorite jazz records EVER.
