Strong jazz accompanied by strong coffee this morning. Dorham goes out on top in his last session as a leader—simply incredible playing, writing and arranging. 3/5 of the players here had previously recorded together on Andrew Hill’s groundbreaking ‘Point of Departure’ and the adventurous spirit of that session (especially from bassist Davis) left a residue that gives this session an X-factor that elevates it to a higher plane. Not that there’s anything free or avant going on here, but to call it progressive hard bop isn’t fully doing justice to ‘Trompeta Toccata’, mandatory for Dorham fans and highly recommended to pretty much everyone.
