Huge find and stellar, all-analog restoration from @gearboxrecords of prime @theloniousmonk live in Copenhagen 1963. The same quartet that recorded ‘Monk’s Dream’ and ‘Criss Cross’: Charlie Rouse-tenor sax, John Ore-bass and Frank Dunlop-drums swings mightily through three Monk originals and two standards as Monk tosses unexpected twists, turns and flourishes throughout with reckless abandon. Fortunately, this is a well-rehearsed outfit who don’t seem to know the definition of “unexpected”…they just use it to swing even harder. Great liner notes by Ethan Iverson of @thebadplus tells the fascinating story of the tapes (literally saved from a garbage dumpster) and Gearbox has done their usual great job with the pressing which is centered, flat and dead quiet. Sonically, this record is EXCELLENT. A must for Monk fans. #jazzandcoffee #theloniousmonk #vinyl #jazz #nowspinning #vinyligclub
